Born on 11 June 1998 in Lagos, Nigeria, Kennedy Ekezie -Joseph is a Nigerian entrepreneur, public speaker and changemaker whose journey is a remarkable story of talent, resilience, purpose and bold ambition.
Kennedy's passion for public speaking began at a young age. He became deeply involved in competitive debating, an experience that eventually took him outside Nigeria for the first time. His talent in debate would later become one of the defining features of his early life; he was ranked among Nigeria's leading competitive debaters for two consecutive years.
Kennedy's ambitions extended far beyond the debating stage.
At just 16 years old, while studying at the University of Calabar, he founded the Calabar Youth Council for Women's Rights, a youth-led social enterprise focused on combating gender-based violence, particularly female genital mutilation, while expanding access to education for young women. The initiative eventually reached communities across Nigeria and established Kennedy as a young advocate for social change.
His academic journey was equally remarkable. Kennedy studied Philosophy at the University of Calabar, graduating with honours at just 19 and becoming the university's youngest-ever graduate. He later became the first Nigerian recipient of the highly competitive Yenching Scholarship, which took him to Peking University in China for a master's degree.
While in China, Kennedy worked at ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, where he was involved in the company's strategy for expanding TikTok's presence in Africa. His experiences across education, consulting and technology would eventually prepare him for his biggest entrepreneurial venture.
In 2021, Kennedy, alongside his co-founders, launched Kippa, a financial management platform designed to help small businesses manage their finances through digital bookkeeping, payments and other financial tools. The idea was born after Kennedy and his brother spent time speaking with small-business owners across Nigeria and discovering the difficulties many faced with traditional, paper-based bookkeeping.
Kippa quickly attracted international attention and investment, growing into one of Nigeria's notable fintech startups. Forbes reported that by 2023, the platform had onboarded hundreds of thousands of businesses and was processing hundreds of millions of dollars in annual transactions.
Kennedy's achievements have earned him recognition on both national and international stages. In 2017, he was named one of the 30 Global Teen Leaders by the We Are Family Foundation and received the Young African Leaders Fellowship associated with President Barack Obama. In 2018, he received the prestigious Queen's Young Leader Award from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. He was also awarded The Future Awards Africa Prize for Technology in 2022.
In 2024, Kennedy was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the Finance category, further cementing his place among a generation of young innovators reshaping the African business and technology landscape.
