Former Bayelsa State governor, founder of NDC and senator, Henry Seriake Dickson, has thrown a bold statement into Nigeria’s political space, saying he believes he is more qualified to become president than opposition figures Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The remark, made during a recent media interview, has quickly triggered debate online and within political circles, as discussions around the next presidential cycle slowly begin to build momentum.
Dickson pointed to his years in office as governor and his time in the National Assembly, saying his experience gives him a deeper understanding of governance and national issues.
“I have governed a state, I have been in the legislature for years, and I understand how government works. In terms of experience and exposure, I believe I am more qualified than many of those being mentioned,” he said.
The comment immediately divided opinion.
Some supporters say Dickson was simply stating confidence in his record, arguing that leadership should be based on proven governance experience. Others, however, see the statement as unnecessary political comparison at a time when many Nigerians are more focused on economic hardship, insecurity, and daily survival.
Peter Obi remains one of the most popular opposition voices since the 2023 elections, especially among young Nigerians, while Rabiu Kwankwaso continues to hold strong influence in northern political structures through the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has responded to the remark.
