Nigeria's creative excellence has once again taken center stage on the global stage as internationally acclaimed artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby unveiled the first-ever official joint portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The monumental artwork, titled The Obamas: Springing Forth (2026), was revealed ahead of the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Commissioned by the Obama Foundation, the portrait will be permanently displayed in the museum's Hope and Change Lobby, where it will welcome visitors from around the world.
Born in Nigeria and now based in Los Angeles, Akunyili Crosby is celebrated for her richly layered mixed-media works that weave together personal memories, African identity, family history, and contemporary life. For this landmark commission, she spent months researching the Obamas' lives, incorporating family photographs, historical references, and meaningful cultural symbols into a vibrant composition that tells the story of their journey together.
Seeing the portrait for the first time, Michelle Obama described it as "all of the stories within the story," while Barack Obama joked about his gray hair, praising the artist's remarkable attention to detail. The emotional unveiling underscored the artwork's role not just as a portrait, but as a visual narrative of legacy, hope, family, and public service.
The commission marks another milestone in Akunyili Crosby's distinguished career and shines a spotlight on Nigeria's contribution to global art. Her achievement reflects the growing influence of African creatives whose work continues to shape international conversations on culture, identity, and history.
As the Obama Presidential Center opens its doors to the public, visitors will be greeted by a masterpiece created by a Nigerian-born artist, an enduring reminder that African talent continues to leave an indelible mark on the world's most prestigious cultural in
stitutions.
